3D Television

It is strongly believed that 2010 will be the breakthrough year for 3D TV technology, mainly helped by the large growing number of 3D movies at the cinema and the mega success of sci-fi epic Avatar. While 3D has taken numerous years to make to the cinemas, this is the year it will begin to enter the home with 3D Television.

For a number of years now the industry has discussed the coming of 3D Television in the home to little effect but now 3D TV is being hailed as the saviour for recession hit manufacturers looking to boost their sales. A 3D Television is a TV that uses 3D technology for example stereoscopic capture, multi-view capture and a 3D display, a special viewing mechanism that project a television programme into a lifelike three-dimensional field. There are numerous techniques for Stereoscopic Video Coding, and stereoscopic distribution formatting including anaglyph, quincunx, and 2D plus Delta. 3D Television sets are those that can work in 3D mode in conjunction with 3D shutter glasses, the 3D TV connects with the shutter glasses "telling" them which eye should see the image being shown at the very moment, recreating a stereoscopic image. A 3D Television set will usually support HDMI 1.4 and a minimum refresh rate of 120Hz.

Samsung is just one of the big TV manufacturers betting on 3D Television being a winning proposition for consumers and the Discovery Channel said that it is forming a joint venture company with Sony to deliver 3D TV channels. BSkyB is said to be planning to launch a 3D TV service later in 2010 plus ESPN has said it will show at least 85 sports events this year on its new ESPN 3D channel.

Samsung’s groundbreaking 3D Television technology delivers a truly amazing viewing experience that makes images leap right out of your TV screen through Active Shutter 3D Glasses making you feel like you’re part of the action. Samsung is launching a full line up of LED, LCD, and Plasma 3D Television sets along with a 3D Blu-ray player bringing you the ultimate in 3D cinema entertainment in your home.

The Samsung 3D TV range will all use the same sequential-frame 3D technology that Panasonic 3D televisions use. This has the 3D TV display alternate images for both eyes at 120Hz then a set of 3D shutter glasses will alternately block the images for each eye at 60Hz resulting in each eye receiving 60 images a second, which your brain then interprets as a constant stream of 3D images.

The new range of 3D Television sets from LG will be available in screen sizes between 47-inches to 55-inches and one of the great features amongst them is the reduced footprint achieved through a 0.63-inch bezel and a 0.87-inch thickness. More fantastic features on the new LG 3D Televisions include Skype video calling and Internet access. The LG 3D TV still does require the use of active shutter glasses but 40 hours of active use can be gained before the glasses require recharging which can be accomplished via a USB connection.

The new LG 3D Television range will be part of its amazing micro-bezel Infinia series and will include 400Hz frame interpolation technology, LED array back-lighting, 864 lights on the 47" and 960 on the 55", a 10m:1 contrast ratio, two 10W invisible speakers, and four HDMI 1.4 ports.

LG 3D Televisions will incorporate built-in Freeview HD tuners, along with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, wireless connectivity, DLNA support and USB 2.0 ports for DixX HD, MP3 and JPEG playback. They will use active-shutter 3D technology, meaning consumers will need suitable 3D Glasses which LG should be giving away free of charge with the 3D TVs. LG electronics will release its 3D TV range in May along with a 3D Blu-ray player.
